The Operational Services Unit's role within the Technical Services Department encompasses a range of activities including the following:

To provide the Council with the appropriate management, structures, expertise and systems necessary for the operation of a multi-discipline, direct work force; to achieve delivery of the Council's operational services, i.e. refuse collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.

To achieve the Council’s statutory and non-statutory obligations in a cost efficient manner;

To achieve the appropriate rate of return on the capital employed in accordance with government requirements.

To maintain effective relationships with other Council Departments.
The Unit works closely with the Technical Services Department’s Client Services Unit in relation to all matters of service provision. The Unit also provides services to the other departments of the Council, as requested.In addition to the above roles, the Direct Services Manager is also responsible for the management of Gilnahirk Golf Course, Access to the Countryside within the Borough and for the Lagan Valley Regional Park, acting as Secretary to its Advisory Committee, and chairing its Steering Group.
