Public Health and Housing

Nuisances

We will investigate your queries and problems on the following subjects:

  •   Defective premises ie NIHE, landlord tenanted & owner occupied.

  •  Smoke, dust and fumes.

  •  Malodours.

  •   Drainage complaints.

  •  Ruinous and dilapidated buildings.

Where housing defects or drainage problems cause a public health nuisance, for example through rising or penetrating dampness, the Council will serve a public health notice to secure repair works.  If the landlord of a property refuses to do these works he may be taken to court.

The Rent Order

If you live in private rented accommodation and your tenancy is regulated, your landlord may be responsible for repairs in excess of those required to prevent public health nuisances.  We will be able to advise you on your entitlement to these repairs.

Unfit Housing

If you think that the house in which you live in is unfit for human habitation, you may contact the NIHE. who will arrange to have your house assessed.  Items which may contribute to a dwelling being unfit include the following:

  • Structural stability.

  • Excessive dampness.

  • Provision of adequate lighting, heating and ventilation.

  • Facilities for food preparation and cooking.

  • Provision of suitably located water closet, wash hand basin and bath.

  • An effective drainage system for foul and waste water.
