The sister cities concept was launched by President D. Eisenhower in 1956. The honorary Chairman of Sister Cities International(SCI) is the President of the United States. The national headquarters are in Washington DC. It is a non profit organisation with a unique worldwide network involving government, business and private voluntary sectors.

SCI works to create and strengthen partnerships between US communities and other international communities in order to encourage educational, cultural recreational, governmental and economic exchanges in the spirit of international goodwill and cooperation.
