Tri-Cycle Scheme

Waste management issues come under the Client and Operational Services units within the Council's Technical & Environmental Services Department.

The Client Services Unit provides strategic direction and policy formulation for waste management, waste disposal and street cleansing.  It also procures and manages waste contracts.  As the Council is a consituent member of arc21, the Eastern Region Waste Management Group, the Client Services Unit has the responsibility for ensuring that the Council is fulfilling its commitments in relation to implementation of the Eastern Region Waste Management Plan.  It also promotes and facilitates environmental awareness, including waste reduction, through educational talks, visits and various initiatives.

The Operational Services Unit provides the majority of Council front-line services and works closely with the Client Services Unit.

Tri-Cycle Scheme (Kerbside Recycling Service)

Why?

The Council has introduced the Tri-Cycle Scheme as part of its strategy to divert waste from landfill, and to meet strict European Union and Central Government waste diversion targets.  Burying rubbish in landfill sites is no longer sustainable and alternatives have to be found.  Waste management practices must now be conducted in a more environmental friendly manner.

European Union Directives, designed to significantly reduce our dependence on landfill as the main method of disposing of our waste, have set challenging targets for all councils.  Castlereagh Borough Council, together with 10 other councils from the Eastern Region of Northern Ireland continue to work within a partnership known as arc21 to address this important issue.

What is it?

The Tri-Cycle Scheme provies households with additional bins, or containers, for the recycling and composting of specific household wastes.

Households will have either a Bryson House Recycling Black ‘Kerbie’ Box or Blue Bin for mixed dry recyclables and a Brown Bin for compostable garden waste only.
