Castlereagh Under 9 Football League
The Castlereagh under 9 league was set up in August 2003,at a meeting in Dundonald International Ice Bowl, after Dungoyne FC had run a similar initiative during season 2002-03. Initially 8 teams applied to join but after the last monthly league meeting in September this has been increased to 10.
The first Chairman of this new league is Billy Brooks a respected local junior referee, from the Dundonald area. The first Secretary is Robert Laverty, who is connected to Dungoyne FC. Drew McIlvenny of Knockbreda FC was elected as the first Treasurer. A three man committee was also formed, which will deal with any issues arising out of the league. The committee is made up of the Chairman, Councillor David Drysdale and Councillor Michael Copeland who were both instrumental in the foundation of the league.
As far as we are aware this is the only 11 a-side under 9 league in the country and is very much in its infancy, however if the first few weeks of the league is anything to go by we will have an exciting season with lots of commitment and skill being shown by these young players. We would extend our thanks to all teams for entering and for having the courage to try this new venture as the rest of the country seem content to play mini soccer at this age group.
On 27th December 2003, the league will be hosting a 7-aside competition and around March time they will be having a cup competition. If any other club would like to enter a team they can contact Secretary Robert Laverty on 07803 041030 or by email at rablaverty@aol.com.
