George Best Castlereagh Youth League
The Castlereagh under 9 league will in future be known as the George Best Castlereagh Youth League. This name change comes with the full permission of the Best family after consulting with the sister of the soccer legend. The family had no hesitation in letting us use the name of the former Northern Ireland star and added that they would be proud to have his name linked with the league as he was a freeman of the Castlereagh borough and indeed started playing in this area.
The league officials are very proud to be linked with the worlds greatest footballer and we realise that if any of the competing players end up with only half his talent they would be able to grace any league in world football. George Best was very keen to see young talent developed in this country and we are proud to be linked with that. Over the past couple of months lots of the players in this league looked upon George as a myth but now they can stand proudly associated with his name and as we have seen through footage and pictures lately he was well named.......THE BEST.
The officers and committee of the George Best Castlereagh Youth League would like to congratulate the players and managers of both Aquinas and Lisburn Youth on reaching the final of the Mayor's Cup. The final will be played on Saturday 22nd April at Wilgar Park, home of Dundela, with kick off being at 10 30 sharp. The game will be played to a finish with 5 mins each way extra time and penalties being played if required to determine the winner.
We would like to thank the Mayor of Castlereagh Councillor Tommy Jeffers for supplying a magnificent new trophy and medals for the winners. This is a great gesture and we are very thankful for this presentation.
At the final we will have a souvenir programme on sale and all parents can purchase them on the day.
The league seven a side and presentation day will take place on Saturday 20th May 2006 at the Billy Neill centre, Dundonald. Starting time will be approx 10 am and finish at approx 4pm. We will have catering on site and we will be doing it all to aid the George Best Foundation which we have adopted as the leagues chosen charity. We would ask all parents and friends of the teams to turn out in big numbers to support the kids and cheer them on.
