IMPORTANT
If your Blue Bin or Brown Bin is found to be contaminated, that is it includes unacceptable wastes, it will not be emptied. It will be the householder’s responsibility to ensure that any contaminants are removed before it is presented for the next scheduled collection day.
Contamination can result in a complete lorry load being rejected by the Materials Recovery Facility or Composting Facility!
What happens to your recyclables?
Bryson House Kerbie Boxes
All correct materials in the Kerbie box are separated at kerbside into a Stillage Vehicle. This vehicle has compartments for specific recyclable material, e.g. one for paper, one for glass, etc. All sorted materials are taken in this vehicle to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), baled and sent for recycling to reprocessors. The MRF is a specialised plant that separates, processes, and stores recyclables that have been collected. Over 99.5% of materials collected for recycling through the Kerbie are recycled.
Blue Bin
All material collected in the Blue bin is taken in a Council Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV) to a clean Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF is a specialised plant that separates, processes, and stores recyclables that have been collected.
A clean MRF accepts recyclable materials that have been separated from refuse. Recyclable materials are then sent on to reprocessors and any residual material that is not suitable for processing goes for disposal.
96% of co-mingled material delivered to the MRF is recycled, the 4% being made up largely of items that should not have been put in the Blue bins in the first place.
Materials from Bryson House are recycled through established reprocessors, with around 80% staying within the UK. Bryson House Recycling has a clear audit system in place for all goods it recycles which identify both the reprocessor and what happens to the materials.
Brown Bin
The material in your brown bin is brought to a composting facility where it undergoes Windrow composting. The organic material is left to decompose outdoors, aided only by watering and mechanical turning for aeration. This method is simple and non-intensive. It is the slowest large-scale method used to produce compost.
