Industrial Pollution

Local authorities are responsible for inspecting and permitting certain industrial activities which have the potential to cause air pollution, this is a function of officers from the Environmental Health Service Unit.

The permit is in effect a licence allowing the holder to operate a process subject to certain conditions.

The purpose of the permit system is to control, limit or prevent the emission of certain prescribed substances and other products from those processes.

Local Authorities are responsible for various categories of processes which can be viewed on the Northern Ireland Environment Agency web-site www.ni-environment.gov.uk

At present, Castlereagh Borough Council inspect the following types of premises:-
  • Unloading of petrol into storage at service stations
  • Re-spraying of Road Vehicles
  • Batching Ready-mixed concrete processes
  • Incineration e.g. Cremation
  • Solvent Emissions e.g. Drycleaners
Any person who intends to operate an installation that requires a permit must submit a Permit Application Form and a fee. There is also an annual subsistence fee payable by each process that continues to operate.

Once an application has been received and considered, a Permit will be issued by Castlereagh Borough Council in accordance with the Government Guidance. The Permit will also contain conditions which set out how the installation should be operated to keep air quality pollution to a minimum.
