Sports Development Programmes

In order to meet the aims and objectives contained in the Sports Development Strategy the Sports Development Unit delivers a number of key programmes throughout the year. These programmes are designed to provide further opportunities for participants, coaches, volunteers and clubs to continue to develop sport and physical activity across the Castlereagh area. Some of the key programmes are identified below.

1. Multi Skills Clubs

Multi Skills clubs are designed to provide the transition from high quality Physical Education (PE) into high quality clubs with progression to either long-term participation in sport and physical activity or performance sport for young people. The key outcome is to develop the FUNdamental movement skills and FUNdamental sports skills of young people in order to provide ease of movement into the sport of their choice as a recreational participant and/or performance athlete.

A Multi Skill Club uses a variety of approaches and contexts to help children develop physical skills from a broad and appropriate development vocabulary. The desired outcomes for a Multi-skill club are:
  • Fun and participation
  • Improved movement: ABC's of agility, balance, co-ordination and speed
  • Enhanced athleticism: ABC's in the context of running, jumping and throwing
  • Increase in power and endurance
  • Continued participation in sport and physical activity
A Multi-skill club does not offer activity dominated by sport specific sessions. By developing children's overall movement vocabulary Multi-skill clubs will help participants to improve their physical literacy at a time before they choose to specialise exclusively in a specific sport or sports. It also equips them to make a wider choice of activities whether they pursue performance or recreation pathways. Hence it has the potential to impact in lifelong involvement in physical activity at a variety of levels.

Multi-skill clubs provide inclusive opportunities for young people. Increasing the range of activities removes gender barriers, which may impede development if a sport specific programme is offered. The clubs are well managed to ensure that they are well positioned with good links to local PE, school sport, governing bodies of sport and other local sport structures.

A number of clubs are offered within the Castlereagh area and for further details click on the link below.

2. Disability Sports Programme

The Sports Development Unit also work closely with local special schools and disability clubs to provide sport and physical activity opportunities for those with special needs, disabilities or learning difficulties. A new Multi Skills clubs programme has been devised for those with disabilities and special needs. The club begins on Tuesday 23rd September at Belvoir Activity Centre from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. 3. Coach Education, Training and Development Courses

Sports coaches can access a whole range of further training courses and workshops, both "sports-specific" and "generic".

Sports Specific

courses are Coach Award Qualifications run by sports governing bodies (GB's) and offer the latest thinking, as well as many drills & activities for coaches to use.

Generic

(non sports-specific) workshops include training on issues such as First Aid, Disability, Child Protection, Equity, Psychology, Fitness, etc, which cover all sports.

Both types of courses and workshops are essential for coaches to be able to offer the best learning experience for players of all ages, in a safe and fair environment. Castlereagh Sports Development Unit is committed to providing local people with an interest in sport the opportunity to access these sports coaching and leadership courses.

4. Club Development

Sports clubs play an essential and significant role in the development of sport in Northern Ireland. Sport Northern Ireland is currently carrying out a consultation process in order to devise a new quality framework for sports clubs in Northern Ireland.

Based on the consultation and research that has been undertaken, the following proposals have been developed with a view to identifying, supporting, recognising and rewarding those clubs working towards and achieving high quality standards.

A new club development scheme will be developed and managed by Sport Northern Ireland. This scheme will consist of a website developed and managed by Sport Northern Ireland, which will provide the following information and resources:
  • Sports club updates;
  • Guidance on starting a sports club;
  • Guidance on developing a sports club;
  • Examples of best practice in relation to club development;
  • Funding information; and,
  • Club development templates
Therefore, the Club Development Scheme will provide important and useful information that is accessible and relevant to sports clubs throughout Northern Ireland

In addition to the development and management of a Club Development Scheme, Sport Northern Ireland will play a key role in the accreditation of sports clubs in Northern Ireland. Guidelines have been developed for the Quality Accreditation of Sports Clubs in Northern Ireland. The guidelines provide advice and guidance in relation to the following key areas:
  • Minimum operating standards for Sports Clubs;
  • Assessment Process;
  • Monitoring and Evaluation; and,
  • Resources and Support.
The guidelines outline the minimum operating standards required for quality sports clubs, and identify necessary procedures, support and resources that must be provided by governing bodies of sport and / or district councils to receive endorsement.

Once the final Club Accreditation Scheme is finalised by Sport Northern Ireland this will be a programme delivered by the Sports Development Unit to assist clubs in Castlereagh with their development. For further information please click on the link below

5. Castlereagh Sports Development Association

Castlereagh Sports Development Association was formed in March 1996 as a new body to assist with the development of sport within the Borough of Castlereagh. It was the initiative of the Council as they recognised the need for liaison between the Council and the local sporting community. Castlereagh Borough Council provides some financial assistance to the CSDA and amongst its executive committee are Councillors (five), local sports club representatives (10) and Leisure Services staff who provide administrative support to the organisation

The original objectives of the CSDA were -
  • To provide a forum for the local sports to advise Castlereagh Borough Council of the collective opinions of local sports interest.
  • To compile and maintain an up-to-date database of all sporting organisations and facilities by the publication of a Castlereagh Sports Directory
  • To promote sport in all ways possible in co-operation with other interested bodies or organisations including local businesses
  • To consult and co-operate with local schools and youth clubs in order that young people of all abilities may take part in sport and physical recreation. The CDSA will regularly review its focus in line with Sport Northern Ireland target groups
  • To encourage the development of coaching and sports administration within the Castlereagh Borough Council area.
  • To give support to sporting individuals or clubs making a major contribution to sport within the Castlereagh Borough area. This support will be in line with criteria agreed by the CSDA
The CSDA currently have a Grant Aid Scheme in place to assist individual sports performers financially with costs incurred during their continued participation in their chosen sport. For further information please click on the link below.
