Grassroots Football Development Programme
The Grassroots Football Development Programme is a partnership between the Irish Football Association and Castlereagh Borough Council. The purpose of the programme is to create a structured approach to the development of football in Castlereagh to enable everyone to reach his or her full potential within the context of football.
The role of the Grassroots Development Officer is to identify initiatives and create an environment within the Borough, which ensures that everyone has access to and can contribute to the Football Development Programme in their area regardless of age, gender, religion or ability.
1. What is Grassroots Football Development
In short all non-elite football. It is for boys and girls of all ages and abilities from any background. This includes players, parents, administrators, teachers, coaches and volunteers. This equates to 98% of all football and it is the foundation of the game
The Grassroots Football Development Programme is a partnership between the Irish Football Association and Castlereagh Borough Council. The Programme has four strategic objectives as set out below.
2. Coach Education
Grassroots Introductory Award
The Irish FA has replaced its old Mini Soccer Leader's Award with the newly formed Grassroots Introductory Award. This attendance based award is aimed at volunteers, parents, and aspiring or existing coaches working in the area of Grassroots Football. The course is 3 hours in duration, with both theoretical and practical content. Participants who complete the course will be presented with the "Grassroots Introductory Certificate" and resource booklet.
This award is not part of the ongoing coaching ladder, however it is designed to encourage those involved in Grassroots Football to gain some information and knowledge and, hopefully, the confidence to go on and take the IFA Level One Coaching Certificate.
IFA Level One Award
This IFA Level One Award has now replaced the Junior Team Managers (JTM) Award, and qualifies you to coach children and young people (6-16) under the supervision of a more qualified football coach. The Junior Team Managers' / Teachers' Awards will continue to be valid until 5 years after completion.
A Level One Coaching Award candidate must complete 21-guided learning hours with a tutor (this includes a certified IFA Child Protection course). The course also provides a certified football specific first aid course.
In addition to the above, each candidate must complete his / her log sheet with 6 hours' coaching experience at their local club/school or at a CIS Licensed Mini-Soccer Centre.
This course will assist you in gaining knowledge to develop basic understanding of safe, ethical and effective football coaching for young people. You will learn how to:
- Safely organise and supervise football activities including Mini Soccer, small sided and conditioned games
- Promote and establish working relationships and high standards between players, coaches and officials
- Understand different aspects of coaching children
- Identify and adapt football activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups
IFA Level One - Coaching Disabled Footballers Award
The course is three hours long and consists of two and a half hours theory and thirty minutes practical. The course is suitable for those either coaching or looking to work with disabled footballers. This introductory course aims to enable coaches to apply knowledge and skills when coaching players with different abilities. The course will be fast paced with lots of group work and interaction. Topics covered in the course are as follows:
- Basic knowledge of disability
- Use appropriate terminology
- Understand safety considerations
- Identify basic communication needs
- Basic knowledge of useful games and adapting sessions
Give It A Blow Referee Course
How do I become a referee? The first step is to take a beginners class, which culminates in an examination in the Laws of the Game. These six-week courses are led by a qualified IFA Referee Instructor and on completion of the course you will be provided with a starter pack and a years' league registration.
