Energy Management
Today, most people are becoming increasingly aware that the welfare of our environment is a collective responsibility. We all play a part in our planets' welfare and therefore should actively develop practices that best serves our, and future generations' resources.
In November 1997, at the UN Climate Change Conference in Kyoto the EU committed itself to an 8% reduction in emissions of six greenhouse gases. The EU target is to reduce emissions by 8% below 1990 emission levels in the period 2008 - 2012. Castlereagh Borough Council aims to play its part, by managing its' energy usage in the most efficient way possible and in doing so can reduce expenditure in energy usage.
As part of Castlereagh Borough Council's commitment to energy efficiency, responsible energy management is practised throughout all its premises, plant and equipment in order to:
- protect the environment
- avoid unnecessary expenditure, and
- prolong the useful life of fossil fuel
Examples of Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Castlereagh Borough Council
- Over 60% of Castlereagh Borough Councils premises' use electricity generated by wind power. This is reducing our Carbon Dioxide emissions to the environment by approximately 360 000Kg annually.
- Dundonald International Ice bowl and the Robinson Centre have installed Combined Heat and Power units which create a reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions of 3 000 000Kg annually.
- Castlereagh Hill Golf Club recycles rainwater to use in its toilets and also uses solar panels to heat water for use in the building.
- Lough Moss uses an 80kW Wind Turbine to generate its electricity. This project was completed in February 2009. It is expected that the Wind Turbine will reduce Carbon Dioxide emission by 66 000Kg annually.
These projects have reduced energy spend and Carbon Dioxide emissions for the Council and it is the Council's intention to continue it's commitment to manage it's energy responsibly for further reduction in both emissions and expenditure.
