Community Sports

The community sports officer is dedicated to help the community in the following ways
  • Advice and Guidance on Funding opportunities in relation to using sport to combat Social deprivation and surrounding issues such as Education and health.
  • Working with community groups and sports clubs to develop access to sport and physical activity, promoting participation and helping to increase levels of good health through active lifestyles.
  • To increase the capacity of the individual/group involved, by providing coaching education to train up the local area and thus help to sustain any initiatives by promoting local involvement and ownership, making projects have long-term sustainability.

Some of the Key programmes run by Community Sports are identified below:

Midnight Street Soccer

Midnight Street Soccer is a community football project which aims to develop sport, to develop communities and to develop people. It provides fun and competition for young people in the heart of the community at times when it is needed most.

The project also aims to decrease anit-social behaviour in young people aged 13-17 years old, as well as challenging sectarian attitudes and building positive relationships between young people in different communities.

Midnight Street Soccer will be starting a new league at the Hanwood 3G pitch place on Saturday 16th January from 9.00pm to 12 midnight.. Transport is provided, and new teams are always welcome!

Older & Active

Older & Active is a community based programme that aims to engage isolated Older People through the medium of physical activity, helping them to reintegrate back into society outside of their own homes.

Physical Activity brings Health and Well Being benefits not only physically but also psychologically and socially, all these benefits are important in maintaining mobility and independence into later life.

Older & Active takes place at Cregagh Community Centre every Monday morning form 10:30am-12:30. Activities include Reflexology and Hand Massage, Boccia, Film Archives, Storytelling, Tai Chi, Armchair Aerobics and Health and Nutrition talks. Transport, lunch and refreshments are provided.

Multi Skills Clubs

Multi Skills clubs are physical activity clubs for young people aged 5-9 and 9-11 years old. The aim is to improve the FUNdamental movement skills and FUNdamental sports skills of young people in a fun and non competitive environment.
The desired outcomes for a Multi-skill club are:

  • Fun and participation
  • Improved movement: ABC's of agility, balance, co-ordination and speed
  • Enhanced athleticism: ABC's in the context of running, jumping and throwing
  • Increase in power and endurance
  • Continued participation in sport and physical activity

The Clubs are a fantastic source of physical activity for young people and help to improve the health and well being of children who take part.

Disability Clubs

This is a physical activity club for young people with special needs, disabilities or learning difficulties. Young people come together to play games, have fun, improve their fundamental skills and make friends. A Disability Club is recommencing this September in Ballybeen Activity Centre on Monday nights from 6-7:30pm.

Wildcats

A Wildcats multi skills club is being run by Community Sports in partnership with the SEELB in Cregagh Community Centre as part of the primary after schools club. Starts this September!

Change Your Future

Change Your Future is a sports coach education programme that encourages young 16-25 year olds to gain new skills in sports coaching. While jobs are hard to come by at the minute; this programme explores the option of an alternative career and helps young people on their way into coaching.
