Access to the Countryside
Castlereagh Borough Council has a dedicated Countryside Officer, based at the Civic Centre, who is committed to delivering access to the countryside for residents and visitors to the Borough.
The Countryside Section includes the following:
- Advising Council in respect to its powers and responsibilities under the Access to Countryside (NI) Order 1983, the principle piece of legislation on Countryside Access within Northern Ireland
- Statutory duty to identify, record and protect existing access opportunities
- Develop and manage existing public rights of way
- Assert new public rights of way
- Development of green spaces and countryside within Castlereagh, including links to and from the Borough

The Borough encompasses Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - The Lagan Valley and includes many significant Sites of Local Importance for Nature Conservation (SLINC's) including (to name but a few):
- Belvoir Park
- Minnowburn - Stream and woodland , incorporating parts of the grounds of Hydebank and Belvoir Hospital
- Lagan Meadows - Grassland on Belvoir Park side of the river
